Guarda is the commercial and industrial center of an area that lives mainly from agriculture and cattle-raising, and produces most of the best portuguese products – such as wine, olive oil, cheese and sheep. That is why you will find fresh, original and delicious products here!
Guarda has its foundation date in the 12th century, so by visiting this city you can “travel back in time” and see monuments and paths from ancient centuries, by doing so, you can gain cultural and historical knowledge, which you could not have otherwise.
What to do?
The Cathedral of Guarda is the monument that most imposes itself to the sight of visitors. It is mostly Gothic in style and is built of granite. The light and harmonious interior contrasts with the solidity of the exterior.
The Regional Museum, installed in the old Paço, shows the economic, social, cultural, historical and geographical development of the district since the Paleolithic era. Sometimes there are exhibitions of local personalities.
The Luís Camões Square or Praça Velha is the lively center of Guarda. Don’t miss the opportunity to see the busy people walking from one side to the other, go into some little shops, drink a coffee and enjoy the vibe.
At the Defensive Walls of Guarda you can feel like you are in medieval times. The walls carry with them stories and battles. But the most attractive thing is the beautiful panoramic view!
